Electricity costs in Bitcoin mining

Electricity is the largest running cost of Bitcoin mining. It decides whether a machine can mine at a profit.

Power per terahash

A miner at 20 J/TH running 100 TH/s uses 2 kW, or 48 kWh per day. At $0.06 per kWh that is about $2.88 per day. At $0.15 it is $7.20.

Why location matters

Mining operators look for cheap, stable power, often hydro or surplus energy, and for cool climates that cut cooling needs.

Cloud mining and power

With rented hashrate the power cost is built into the price. The price you pay is therefore a cost, and the Bitcoin produced can be worth more or less than it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good electricity price for mining?

Operators generally look for very low prices per kWh. Home electricity prices are often too high.

Does cooling use power?

Yes, which is why PUE and immersion cooling matter.
