The next Bitcoin halving

The Bitcoin halving is a rule written into the protocol: every 210,000 blocks the block subsidy is cut in half. The current subsidy is 3.125 BTC per block, and the next halving, expected around 2028, will lower it to 1.5625 BTC.

How the halving works

Blocks are found roughly every ten minutes, so 210,000 blocks take about four years. Each halving reduces the new bitcoin issued per block. This is how Bitcoin reaches its 21 million cap in a predictable way.

When is the next one?

The next halving happens at block 1,050,000. Because block times vary, the exact date can only be estimated, and it is expected around 2028. Several block explorers publish a live countdown.

What changes for miners

The subsidy part of a miner's revenue is cut in half, while transaction fees are unaffected. Machines that were barely profitable can become unprofitable, and less efficient hardware is switched off. That is why efficiency in J/TH matters more after each halving.

What it does not tell you

A halving does not guarantee a price move. Bitcoin's price depends on many factors, and past behaviour is not a promise of future results.
