ASIC vs GPU mining

ASICs and GPUs can both run mining algorithms, but they sit at opposite ends of the specialisation spectrum.

ASIC miners

An ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) is a chip designed to do one thing. Bitcoin ASICs only compute SHA-256, and they do it far more efficiently than any general-purpose processor. The trade-off is that they cannot do anything else and lose value as newer generations arrive.

GPU miners

Graphics cards are flexible parallel processors. They were popular for coins using other algorithms, such as Ethereum before its move to proof of stake in 2022. GPUs can be resold or reused for gaming and AI, but they are far less efficient at SHA-256.

Comparison

For Bitcoin the choice is settled in practice:

  • [+]Efficiency: ASICs win by orders of magnitude
  • [+]Flexibility: GPUs can switch algorithms and uses
  • [+]Resale: GPUs keep value, ASICs depreciate quickly
  • [+]Noise and heat: both need serious cooling

Frequently asked questions

Can a GPU mine Bitcoin?

Technically yes, but the energy cost is far higher than the reward, so it is not viable.
