Pool payout methods

A payout method is the rule a pool uses to turn shares into bitcoin for its members. The main differences are who carries the luck risk and whether transaction fees are included.

PPS and FPPS

Pay per share pays a fixed amount for each valid share, whether or not the pool finds a block, so the pool carries the luck risk. FPPS also includes an estimate of transaction fees.

PPLNS

Pay per last N shares pays only when the pool finds a block and splits the reward over the most recent shares. Income is more irregular but fees to the pool are often lower.

PROP

Proportional pays each member their share of the work done in a round once a block is found.

Choosing

Regular income with a higher fee, or irregular income with a lower fee. There is no universally best option, so compare the pool's published fee and payout threshold.

Frequently asked questions
