What is a terahash?

A terahash per second (TH/s) means one trillion hash computations every second. It is the standard unit used to describe the power of a Bitcoin miner.

The units

1 TH/s is 1,000 GH/s. 1 PH/s is 1,000 TH/s and 1 EH/s is 1,000 PH/s. The Bitcoin network runs at hundreds of EH/s.

Why it matters

Your expected share of the rewards is your hashrate divided by the network hashrate. Doubling your TH/s doubles your share, but results still vary from day to day.

TH/s is not profit

The same hashrate earns less after a halving or when difficulty rises, and the Bitcoin earned has a price that moves. Compare the cost of each TH/s with what it produces, not just its size.

Frequently asked questions

How many TH/s do I need?

There is no minimum. Your share of rewards scales with your hashrate.

Is more TH/s always better?

Only if the cost per TH/s is justified by what it produces, which is never guaranteed.
